Cancellation and Early Return Conditions in Car Rental in Turkey
In the rental process, perhaps the least-noticed but most grievance-causing issue is the cancellation and early-return conditions. Your holiday plans may change, your business trip may be cancelled, or you may need to return the car earlier than planned. Knowing in advance how much you will pay in these cases or whether you can get a refund protects both your wallet and your peace of mind. Free Cancellation Window
Most rental companies grant their customers a free cancellation right within a certain period. As an industry standard, this period extends to 24 to 48 hours before the pick-up time. So if you are picking up your car at 10:00 on Friday, you can cancel your booking (under 48-hour policies) until 10:00 on Wednesday with no deduction.
- Cancellation 48 hours before: Most international and premium companies offer this window; you get a full refund.
- Cancellation 24 hours before: A common policy for local companies and the economy segment.
- Prepaid bookings: On some promotional or discounted rates the cancellation right may be restricted; be careful with such bookings.
Practical tip: If your plans are not yet firm, choose bookings with a "flexible cancellation" option. Even if it costs a few lira more, a flexible rate saves money in the long run.
Late-Cancellation Fees
If you cancel outside the free window, the company may apply various deductions. Common practices are:
- One day's rental deduction: For cancellations within 24 hours of pick-up, the daily rate is charged.
- Partial refund (50%): Some companies refund half of the total amount for late cancellations.
- Operation fee: A fixed service charge of between 50 and 150 TL may be withheld.
Contacting the company as soon as you realise you must cancel is the most effective way to minimise the deduction.
Early Return Rules
This is the area where customers are most often mistaken. When you return your vehicle earlier than planned, most companies do not refund the remaining days. So you made a 7-day booking and returned the car at the end of day 4; the entire 7-day amount you paid stays with the company.
- Reason: Companies apply a discounted daily rate on long-term bookings. If the daily rate were recalculated on early return, the payment for the remaining days would disappear anyway.
- Exception: Some premium companies may refund 50% of the remaining days, provided you give at least 3 days' notice.
- Recommendation: Plan the rental period realistically. If you are unsure, book a shorter period and extend if needed.
Extending is usually a more flexible process; you can inform the company by phone and return the car on the new date.
No-Show
If you do not turn up to collect the car despite having a booking, and do not inform the company, this is recorded as a "no-show". The penalties are quite severe:
- Full charge: The entire booking amount is charged and no refund is given.
- Blacklist risk: Customers who repeatedly no-show may be refused future bookings by some companies.
- Credit card pre-authorisation: Even if no prepayment was made, an automatic charge may be taken from the credit card.
If you cannot make it at the last minute, at least inform the company with a phone call. This simple step can significantly reduce the deductions.
Online vs. Counter Booking
- Online bookings: Usually have more flexible cancellation policies. Under consumer protection law, a 14-day right of withdrawal may apply (before the usage date).
- Agency / airport counter bookings: For in-person bookings the conditions can be stricter; since a contract is signed, the right of withdrawal is limited.
- Phone booking: Recorded calls usually offer rights similar to online bookings.
With online bookings, note the difference between a "prepaid special rate" and a "standard rate". Special rates are cheaper but the refund right may be restricted.
