Car Rental Insurance in Turkey: CDW, SCDW, TP & PAI Explained

Car rental insurance Turkey CDW SCDW

When renting a car, the biggest confusion arises with the insurance options. Abbreviations such as CDW, SCDW, TP and PAI, and terms like deductible, theft and personal accident cover, can seem complicated at first glance. Moreover, some rental companies lure you in with a low daily price and set a high-deductible trap. In this guide we explain car rental insurance in Turkey one by one and tell you clearly which insurance is needed in which situation.

Compulsory Insurance — Third-Party Liability

In Turkey, third-party liability insurance (compulsory financial liability) is a legal requirement for all vehicles. On rental cars this insurance is always included in the daily price and is not charged separately. Liability insurance covers the material/bodily damage you cause to another vehicle or third parties. However, it does not cover damage to the vehicle you are driving — that is the critical point.

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)

CDW covers damage to the body of the rental car in an accident. Most Turkish rental companies include CDW in the standard package. But beware: CDW is not full protection. It comes with a certain deductible (excess). Typical deductible range:

  • Economy segment: 3,000 – 7,000 TL
  • Mid segment: 7,000 – 12,000 TL
  • Premium / SUV: 12,000 – 25,000 TL

So if 5,000 TL of damage occurs and the deductible is 7,000 TL, you pay the entire amount yourself. CDW only kicks in for the amount above the deductible.

SCDW (Super CDW) — Full Protection With No Deductible

SCDW is an additional insurance that sets the deductible to zero or reduces it to a very low level. It costs 50–150 TL extra per day. It is strongly recommended in the following cases:

  • If your driving experience is under 3 years
  • If you plan to travel on mountainous or winding routes (Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia)
  • If you will drive long distances in winter conditions
  • If the car will be used for a long time in heavy city traffic

On a 5-day rental, the SCDW add-on costs about 250–750 TL; but even a small parking scrape will more than repay this investment.

Theft Protection (TP)

TP applies if the vehicle is stolen. In Turkey it is usually offered together with CDW and not sold separately. However, before signing the contract, check the coverage details: are parts such as tyres, wheels, glass and headlights included in TP? Some companies place these parts in the "vandalism" category and charge extra.

PAI (Personal Accident Insurance)

PAI covers injury or death of the driver and passengers in an accident. It ranges from 20 to 60 TL per day. However, it is important to know: your existing health insurance (public or private) may already cover accidents. If you have private health insurance, PAI is usually unnecessary.

The Deductible Trap

The most common rental trap in Turkey is the combination of a low daily price and a high deductible:

  • Company A: 1,500 TL/day, deductible 4,000 TL — real protection is high
  • Company B: 1,100 TL/day, deductible 18,000 TL — a big shock for a small amount of damage

When deciding, look not only at the daily price but at the deductible and the SCDW cost. The total cost calculation is always the real comparison.
